Lufkin Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Project
Lufkin, Texas
Lufkin Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Project
KSA completed all engineering activities for this project including grant application, Safe Routes to School Plan, environmental,
coordination with TxDOT for on-system sidewalks, survey, design, bidding and construction oversight.

The proposed sidewalks were designed to accommodate pedestrian traffic thus enhancing safety of students and limiting the
possibilities of vehicular to pedestrian accidents.  By providing sidewalks, the students were afforded a safe route for walking along
roads shared by vehicular traffic.

Traveling on foot or by bicycle on Denman Ave. is extremely dangerous. Denman Ave. is a busy 4 lane state highway with a two-way left-
turn lane. The street has curb and gutter but had no continuous sidewalks. The existing short strips of sidewalk are on the south side of
Denman Avenue. The existing sidewalk is very narrow and is not wide enough to accomodate the volume and type of pedestrian traffic
present in the area nor meet ADA standards. The busiest street crossing had no curb ramps and no sidewalk on one end forcing
students to use the same path used by vehicles. Live Oak Lane is a residential class street with two lanes for traffic but had no
sidewalks for pedestrians.

Proposed improvements for this sidewalk project included:
  • Construction of new sidewalks and driveways with ADA ramps on both sides of the street on Live Oak Lane (7,142 feet serving
Brookhollow Elementary School.  The new sidewalks were constructed on Live Oak Lane between Copeland St. and Old Union
    Rd (FM 1271)
  • Construction new sidewalks and driveways with ADA ramps on both sides of the street on Denman Ave. ( 4,061 feet) serving
Lufkin Middle School.  The new sidewalks were constructed on Denman Ave. (Spur 278) between S. Timberland Dr. (Bus. U.S.
Highway 59) and S. Chesnut St. (Bus. U.S. Highway 69)
  • Street crossing markings
Funding was provided by TxDOT as part of the Safe Routes To School Program and Lufkin’s project was one of the first completed in
the state.
