KSA Engineers, Inc. assisted the City of Taylor in the planning, development, design, and construction of their Safe Routes to School project. Beginning with the creation of a Safe Routes to School Plan and TxDOT Application for the City and School District, KSA helped pursue and secure funding through the federal grant program. Extensive planning and environmental analysis was completed by KSA to determine the safest, most cost effective, and accessible sidewalk routes as well as secure the proper State approvals for the proposed improvements.
During design, input was gathered from the community via multiple public hearings and presentations on the proposed improvements.
KSA incorporated this community input and worked continuously with the City, TxDOT, and other stakeholders to develop the most desirable sidewalk improvements for Taylor’s students and the general community.
The project included more than 12,000 feet of variable width sidewalk connecting surrounding neighborhoods with three Taylor schools. The proposed routes were designed to expand on existing park and neighborhood pedestrian infrastructure to improve and connect even more schools and residences to the City’s overall pedestrian and hike & bike system. Notable features of the project include unique alignments through established neighborhoods to accommodate and preserve homeowners’ landscaping and innovative road-side culvert modifications to bridge over a drainage channel while keeping costs low and under budget.
