Civil engineering firm to design runway improvements
KSA Engineers, Inc. has been selected to provide planning and architectural/engineering services for the Corpus Christi International Airport (CCIA).
Since 2006, the Federal Aviation Administration has been providing funding with a sharp focus on eliminating runway intersection locations that are potentially confusing to pilots. The V-shaped layout of two runways at CCIA is one such location.
KSA has been hired to design the planned improvements separating the runway ends. In this project, all runway ends will be affected. Runway 35 will be displaced and the opposite end, Runway 17, will be extended by approximately 600 feet. Similarly, Runway 31 will be displaced, and Runway 13 will be extended by roughly 1600 feet. The connecting taxiways will be modified to align with the new runway ends, and the navigational aides on all four runways will be relocated or replaced accordingly.
Over the next 12 months, KSA will complete several work items to get this project under construction. An environmental assessment will be completed, an Airports GIS will be prepared and new flight procedures will be coordinated (in addition to the design of these proposed changes). The FAA intends to fund the design in Fiscal Year 2011 with construction funds anticipated for Fiscal Years 2012 and 2013.
