Water storage tank in Malakoff needs repairs
Source: Malakoff News Online 07.15.2011
By Michael V. Hannigan
The Malakoff City Council has another financial decision to make following its
regular meeting Monday night.

Council members heard this week that one of the city's water tanks needs the roof
replaced. The top of the water ground storage tank at the "ice house" is corroded and
pockmarked with holes.

Representatives from KSA Engineers, along with Public Works Director Tim Whitley,
told the council that the type of corrosion seen in the tank isn't all that rare.

"It is just what happens when you store chlorinated water in steel tanks," said Ned
Muse of KSA.

Whitley told council members he took the tank offline about two months ago as soon
as the trouble with the roof came to light.

"We shut it down immediately," he said. "It is not really a health hazard, but it is
structurally a hazard."

Muse told council members the city's other tanks should also be inspected and likely
need to be sandblasted and repainted to avoid more costly repairs like the roof
replacement. Muse said normally, water storage tanks are repainted inside about
every 10 years.

"This is a maintenance issue," he said. "This didn't happen overnight."

For the City of Malakoff, it is also a financial issue. While specific figures weren't
discussed during the meeting, afterward KSA engineer Walter Hicks admitted the
roof repair could run close to $100,000, and that figure doesn't include maintenance
to the other tanks.

Monday, the council approved a resolution that would allow the city to include the
repairs in a future bond, if council members decide to go in that direction. No other
decisions were made, however, and Whitley and KSA are expected to bring cost
estimates to the council next month.
