San Angelo Regional Airport, also known as Mathis Field in Texas, is currently undergoing a $4 million renovation project, which involves the creation of a sleek, modern terminal with an open floor plan.
The renovation scheme is aimed at making the facility look like a modern metropolitan airport with work on the Mathis Field terminal starting in 2011. Mathis Field’s arrivals and departures structure will receive a face-lift, which will be completed by early 2013. Featuring an open floor plan, the new facility will replace the current cramped space.
The key objective behind the renovation project is to tackle space issues. This is achieved by opening the floor plan. The officials are also planning to reduce the criss-crossing flow of arriving and departing passengers. Significant spatial improvements form one of the main objectives behind the refurbishment.
The renovation project will widen the narrow 4ft passageway that connects the main lobby with the baggage claim area. The baggage claim area will be expanded to relieve the congestion. The Transportation Security Administration area will be enhanced to make room for new X-ray machines.
The terminal's two cafes, Mathis Field and Sister's, will not be altered. Sister's will get an outdoor seating area in front of the terminal. The solid wall that blocks the concourse will be replaced with glass. The project design that calls for a slight increase in the actual square footage of the terminal building, has been completed by KSA Engineering. |
