Engineering a safer route for students

Terrell City Council this week approved the use of nearly $80,000 in grant funds that
will eventually lead to construction of sidewalks to several local schools.

Council met Tuesday to approve employment of KSA Engineers for design of a Safe
Routes To School project that will add 9,380 linear feet of sidewalks and associated
improvements along main roadways accessing four Terrell ISD campuses.

"We applied for and received from the Texas Department of Transportation a Safe
Routes To School grant last year," said City Engineer Steve Rogers, who added that
the grant totaled $533,726. "The sidewalks and associated improvements will
service Burnett, Kennedy, Long and Wood elementary schools."

Council officially set aside $79,760 to pay KSA Engineers for those services.

Since the engineering services are a part of the Safe Route To School project, grant
monies not city funding will be used to pay KSA Engineers.

"This is a situation where grant funds are available and no local participation or
match is required," Rogers said.

According to Rogers, the goal is to have the new sidewalks in place by the beginning
of the 2012-13 school year.
