KSA Engineers’ team of certified professionals is growing with the addition of Grayson Cox and David Perkins who recently passed their Texas professional engineer licensing exams.

Grayson Cox, P.E., a graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, began working with KSA during his junior year in college as part of the University’s Cooperative Engineering Education Program. His experience as a project assistant, under the supervision of Austin Division Manager Stephen Dorman, P.E., earned credits toward his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering as well as provided the opportunity for employment with the firm after graduation.

Now a design engineer in KSA’s Austin office, Cox said he is excited about the opportunity to take more ownership over his projects as a licensed professional, which he could not do as an “Engineer in Training.”

“An E.I.T. must always work under the guidance of a P.E. and can never have complete ownership and responsibility of their projects,” Cox said “By achieving a P.E. license, your opportunities for company advancement, professional growth, and industry recognition are greatly increased.  But with those opportunities comes real responsibility much like the personal transition from a kid to an adult.”

David Perkins, P.E., a graduate of Texas Tech University, began working with KSA Engineers two and a half years ago. He said the difficulty of the exam met his expectations, but he went in prepared.

“I started preparing for the P.E. exam in January of this year and spent about 10-12 hours a week preparing for it,” Perkins said. “The exam was about the level of difficulty I expected. The review course and materials are fairly accurate in how they portray the exam.”

Like Cox, Perkins believes the P.E. license is very important for anyone hoping to progress in public sector engineering projects.

“Anyone who is serious about a career as an engineer and wants to work in the public sector should get a PE license or be working towards it,” he said. “Being a P.E. opens up opportunities for advancement and increased responsibility in an engineering firm.”
