Diboll discussing water purchase from Lufkin
Source: The Lufkin Daily News, 09.22,2009
The City of Diboll is discussing details of a water purchase from the City of Lufkin. As the contract is written currently, it would be a 10-year term, securing the purchase of six million gallons, with the option to renew in three five-year intervals. The reason for the purchase is to protect the longevity of Diboll's aging water infrastructure, Diboll Mayor Bill Brown said. In order to bring in water from Lufkin, the City of Diboll will have to spend more than $3 million to put infrastructure in place, including a pump station and piping. The city is discussing options for financing that purchase. Lufkin has agreed to carry the water into North Diboll. Diboll will pay Lufkin $1.85 per 1,000 gallons with no minimum purchase amount. The maximum purchase amount will meet Diboll's needs through 2030, according to KSA Engineer Project Manager Alan Draper. Lufkin Assistant City Manager Keith Wright said he's pleased with the deal. "Due to the recent purchase of the AbitibiBowater wells, the City of Lufkin has a large supply available. It's a win/win for both of us," Wright said. "We get to sell the water and Diboll gets a secure water supply." It could take a few years before the first drop of Lufkin water hits Diboll pipes, Brown said. "Once we get done with the easesments, construction is expected to take 180 to 270 days. It could be until 2012 before we're able to start construction," Brown said.
